Anesthesiologist Assistants are highly skilled, Master degree earning members of the anesthesia care team. The Anesthesiologist Assistant functions as a specialty physician assistant under the direction of a licensed Anesthesiologist.
The Anesthesiologist Assistant's responsibilities, in the hospital setting are numerous from obtaining a preliminary preanesthetic history, performing regional anesthesia techniques including inducing, maintaining, and altering anesthesia levels as well as providing postoperative recovery techniques. The responsibilities of the Anesthesiologist Assistant are comparable to the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
The Anesthesiologist Assistant profession has recently been in the media spotlight as a NEW profession but AA's have been serving our communities since the 1960's when a group of Anesthesiologists created the profession which hoped to alleviate the critical shortage of anesthesia providers. The first Anesthesiologist Assistant program began in 1969.
Today, Anesthesiologist Assistant programs are on the rise as laws are being passed allowing the licensing of these professionals in states throughout the country.
The Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine approved the first Anesthesiologist Assistant license in Florida in March, 2005. The 2004 Legislature passed senate bill 626 and was signed by Governor Bush in June 2004. The bill creates the licensing of Anesthesiologist Assistants in Florida. Nova Southeastern University is the first Anesthesiologist Assistant program in Florida which began classes in June of 2006.
Currently there are four Anesthesiologist Assistant programs that are offered throughout the country, which are:
Nova Southeastern University
in Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio South University in Savannah, Georgia
